The NCAA conducted its first women's volleyball championship in 1981. In the 1988-1989 academic year, 721 schools were sponsoring varsity women's volleyball teams, with 9486 participants. By 2003-2004, the number of varsity teams had increased 36% to 982, involving 13 310 participants.
