Dick Merriwell's Fighting Chance

Frank and Dick Merriwell return in another wholesome athletic adventure, where college camaraderie, football rivalry, and moral courage collide with a mystery far beyond the gridiron. In Dick Merriwell's Fighting Chance, also titled The Split in the Varsity, Burt L. Standish delivers the kind of high-spirited fiction that made the Merriwell stories a favorite with young readers: lively, humorous, and built around fair play, ambition, and strong character. The opening finds Dick among his friends in a cheerful college sitting room, trading jokes, teasing one another, and facing the pressures of study, sport, and growing responsibility. Bob Hollister's football obsession threatens his academic standing, while warnings from the dean force him to choose between reckless devotion to the game and a more balanced future. Yet the story soon widens into suspense when a hidden fortune, a suspicious farmhouse, and the desperate actions of Jellison and Archie McCormick draw Dick into a dangerous tangle of theft, deception, and mistaken identity. With wit, teamwork, and courage, the Merriwells face both campus troubles and a gripping criminal chase. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
