Divine Comedy, Cary’s Translation

Dante finds himself lost in a forest so savage that remembering it renews his fear—and the path ahead is blocked by a panther, a lion, and a ravenous she-wolf. Then a voice speaks from the wilderness: Virgil, the poet whose verses Dante has long revered.

At the midway point of mortal life, a failed climb toward a sunlit mountain sends Dante into a journey beyond the world of the living. Virgil offers to guide him through an eternal realm of shrieks and torment, then onward to souls who endure in hope; but he cannot lead Dante all the way to the blessed. With terror tugging him backward and an unknown road before him, Dante must trust a guide from another age. What awaits beyond the first dark passage?
