PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Across a series of interconnected tales, Boldt (Did You Fart?) presents an amiable graphic novel, a series launch about friendship's highs and lows. An opening portrait gallery introduces the comic's cast, as well as their likes and dislikes, before the work dives into the first of 14 stories. Doglike classmates Willow and Mia have been best friends forever, but wordsmith Willow begins to worry about their dynamic after learning about artist Mia's feelings for feline classmate Jesse. Despite Willow's efforts to steer conversation elsewhere, it seems that all Mia can talk, think, dream, and doodle about is Jesse. The situation worsens in the following entry: as she learns more about Jesse, Willow's attempts to warn Mia that "he's a jerk" result in a friendship fallout. A heartfelt apology on both sides ("Maybe I'm a little jealous"; "I'm sorry I was mean") one story later keeps the duo's good times rolling through birthday surprises, ice cream hangouts, and more. Easy-to-follow paneling and sprightly mixed-media illustrations feature pastel washes of color, handily guiding readers along as the protagonists get up to all manner of mischief and merry-making. The goofy humor and physicality of the oblong-shaped animal characters ensure that rollicking fun is had by all throughout this madcap collection. Ages 8–12.
