Working chronologically, from Tapestry (1970) to American Pie (1971) all the way through to American Boys (2024), the book explores the reception of McLean's work in the wake of the success of American Pie, concluding with a consideration of how the artist ultimately came to terms with the cultural impact of his most famous song, "American Pie."
