Down the Mother Lode

One Sunday in Stinson’s Bar, the poker smoke clears, silver candlesticks appear, and a preacher is summoned to marry a couple and christen a baby.

In California’s gold country in the late 1850s, a remote barroom must serve as church, gathering place, and refuge from the dangers outside. William Duncan, a gentleman down on his luck, has spent the night gambling away his gold and drinking over a disappointing strike. Then a letter arrives from overseas, just as a rider bursts in with news of a shooting. With a wedding, a christening, and a plea for justice converging around the same table, Duncan’s Sunday takes a turn no card game could have dealt. What will the letter ask of him—and what will this rough-hewn community call justice?
