Queen goes to an operating theater with the intention of observing a surgical procedure but stumbles upon a murder instead. Growing up as the son of a police detective, Ellery Queen is no stranger to a world filled with violence and crime. He has become accustomed to encountering gruesome crime scenes as he assists the New York City homicide squad with his deductive skills. However, the idea of witnessing a live surgery, with all its potential for blood and gore, is enough to unsettle him.
Despite his initial discomfort, Queen accepts an invitation from a doctor to observe an operation. He mentally prepares himself for what he might witness in the operating room. However, to his surprise, it's not his stomach that's tested but his intellect. The patient in question is Abigail Doorn, a wealthy woman in a diabetic coma. The hospital staff has already stabilized her blood sugar levels and prepared her for surgery. Yet, just moments before the operation begins, the doctors make a chilling discovery – Abigail Doorn has been strangled to death while lying unconscious on her gurney. Queen had come to the hospital with the intention of observing surgeons at work, but now he finds himself thrust into a role where he must use his investigative skills to solve a murder.
