A severed Tyrannosaurus Rex head is delivered to Bryan and Loretta Gilliam at their Montana ranch. Recent photos of them and their three children are spiked on the Rex's teeth. Who is behind the threat and why? Private investigator Mike Mathews is hired to track down the culprits.

The grisly delivery kicks off a third summer of dinosaurs roaming the Continental Divide in Montana and Idaho. Three families struggle to deal with the invasive species: the Gilliams, helicopter pilot Peter Lacroix and his young family, and paleontologists/dinosaur trackers Hayden Fowler and Nora Lemoyne who are involved in a two-year romantic relationship. Also in the mix are exotic animal traffickers, a shady taxidermist with a bizarre collection of preserved animals, and the Quetzal Whisperer, an odd falconer-turned-pterosaur-trainer who commands his Quetzalcoatlus flyers to fetch small mammals, and sometimes even human body parts. And of course there are the dinosaurs, visitors to Earth from the Late Cretaceous, returning to the area after 66 million years: Tyrannosaurus Rex, Dromaeosaurus, Deinosuchus, Quetzalcoatlus, Albertosaurus, Triceratops, and Ankylosaurus.

Endangered Species is at once a science fiction thriller, family saga, crime story, and romance. This high adventure tale twists and turns through a series of shocking events, bringing the Cretaceous Chronicles trilogy to a dramatic conclusion.
