Euphorion

Euphorion is Vernon Lee's elegant meditation on the survival of the past in later art, a richly interpretive tribute to Walter Pater that moves between classical antiquity, the medieval world, and the Renaissance. Through a series of essays, Lee traces how beauty, history, and artistic feeling are inherited, transformed, and revived in poetry, drama, and aesthetics. She presents Renaissance Italy as intellectually lucid, socially ordered, and politically advanced, yet also as a culture where evil could appear serene, graceful, and almost innocent. Against this calm corruption, English dramatists such as Webster, Tourneur, and Marston turn hidden moral rot into fierce tragedy and terror. Lee also explores medieval poetry's musical but narrow imagination: spring becomes decorative rather than pastoral, and enchanted forests dominate a landscape strangely lacking in fields, orchards, and cultivated life. The result is a subtle, comparative study of cultural memory, artistic form, and the moral shadows beneath beauty. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
