When Jacy Wall cleaned out her attic, she didn't know that she ended up throwing away a precious piece of family history. But then her cousin's wartime diaries were rescued by an enterprising antiques dealer and she discovered a past that she didn't know existed.

Evelyn Shillington's diaries tell the story of a woman full of British pluck who gamely followed her officer husband around Britain in course of his WWII army war service - making a home for them both in each of their billets, getting involved in local war work. They encompass a series of wonderful pen portraits of people (often women) and places at the most extraordinary time, the stories of which are wound around the story of her own peripatetic marriage. Jacy's piecing together of her cousin's story brings these all to life for today's reader.
