INTRODUCTION Twenty million infants with low birth-weight (2,500 g) are born each year in developing countries, representing 16% of all births (1). The majority of these infants are born at term and are growth-retarded (1,2). Intrauterine growth retardation is associated with increased mortality and morbidity (3,4) and may also lead to later developmental and behavioural deficits (5,6). It is important to understand the factors that contribute to growth retardation in different populations to devise appropriate interventions to improve maternal and infant outcomes.
