After an unfortunate incident during her girlfriend's twenty-first birthday celebration, Ashleen Gallagher finds herself six months into a life sentence. She's always had a short fuse, and with unnatural strength to back it up, Ashleen has never fit in well with the community of her small hometown.

Just when she's resigned herself to her fate, a mysterious woman from her father's past arrives to recruit her. She's taken to Alexandria, the last bastion of the Order of Huntsmen, where she discovers she shares abilities once thought unique to her father before his untimely death.

Ashleen is recruited by Izzy to be his team's tranq. She meets Dahei, Demetrius, and Morpheus, the unfairly attractive vesper who's dating her now ex-girlfriend. While she struggles with feelings of doubt and resentment, she must also battle an assortment of creatures straight out of legend.

Just when she begins to understand her new world, the facts shift, and she's told the plot that killed her father may have involved the very gods. Determined to track down the true culprit behind the tranqs' rages, Ashleen plunges head first into a secret war.

If she's to discover the truth of her identity, save her fellow tranqs, and avenge her father, Ashleen will have to choose a side. But how can she be sure she's making the right choice if neither side will tell her the whole truth?
