Edwin Abbott Abbott’s 1884 romance begins on a vast, paper-like plane where figures move but can never rise or sink. The Square who tells its story lives among strict ranks measured by sides: women are lines, while soldiers are sharp, narrow triangles. Yet he has glimpsed a reality beyond the plane, and knows the secret of light and space—truths his countrymen dismiss as madness. How can he make them see what their world has taught them is impossible?
