Skye has met with Steele after spending a summer in Tauranga and then the following winter on the Coromandel in precarious circumstances. Together they go in search of her Uncle and Aunt when a message is received from his younger brother, who disappeared before last winter.

Once again taking responsibility for her actions, after finding he was held captive on the Tanker, Skye stows away on it with the help of friends, and she returns to the Island she grew up on. Three people spend the winter in isolation until help arrives, and they finally return home and back to the Valley.

Both Steele and Skye can read the truth about what happened to Skye in her early life through her father's writings. If her own story was bad, this is unbelievable until another man comes into their lives who can verify this story as being true. Because he, too, has crossed over; not once, but twice.
