Adm. Raphael Semmes, a Maryland native, entered the Naval School at Norfolk in 1831 and graduated the next year from a course and was promoted to passed midshipman. Eventually, he'd be seen as a national hero for the South. As captain of the Sumter and the Alabama, he totaled many merchant vessels and became feared on the seas for outmaneuvering the Union Navy. He spent a lot of time in Europe and returned to command the Confederacy late in the war.
