Hassan

Thirty-seven times Hassan has sighed “Eywallah” on his mat, and still his friend Selim cannot cheer him: the stout confectioner is in love.

In James Elroy Flecker’s Old Baghdad, sugar steams in Hassan’s shop while poetry, gossip and magic mingle in the market air. Hassan longs for Yasmin, a beautiful widow who has barely noticed him, but Selim’s proposed cure—a love philtre from a mysterious magician—could cost ten dinars and Hassan his good name if it proves a fraud. Beneath his comic complaints is a man who dreams of art, music and a life larger than his trade, yet fears he is too ordinary to win the woman he desires. Can magic sweeten Yasmin’s heart—or will Hassan’s hopes leave him poorer in more ways than one?
