Kathryn Rollins, heiress to the Rollins shipping fortune, sees her life slip away from her when her father promises her hand in marriage to his partner in the shipping business. Desperate to escape and have some say in her own future, she responds to an ad for a mail order bride and boards the train to Colorado as plain Kate Rush, a young maid servant from a poor family who would be a good match for a hard working ranch hand in need of a wife. She is prepared to tackle a rough life and hard work if it will earn her a husband and family to call her own far from her father's callous use of the people around him. 

Danford Brandt is the heir to the largest ranch in Windy Banks, Colorado, under a deadline enforced by his father's will to marry before he claims his inheritance. In a town of few women, most of whom only see his land, his choices are limited. Urged on by his younger brother, Danford places an ad and sends for a bride from out East, whom he meets as unassuming Dan Barton, one of the dozen ranch hands who work the big cattle ranch for a living.

United in their desire to see if they can suit each other and make a future, Dan and Kate both keep their falsehoods wrapped tight even as the truth of what they see in each other brings them closer together... but the truth may bring their hoped for future crashing down.
