This lengthy bio-documentary follows the author's exploits into the heart of Japan in his attempt to learn their history and evolution into a "modern" society, without the common "alien" viewpoint with which most foreigners unwittingly bias their historical understanding. Published near the end of the 19th century, this book provides an excellent lens with which to view the Japanese sociopolitical transformation.
