Background From a normative perspective, the recognition of the advanced cancer patient's suffering forms the basis for the nurse's ability to acknowledge and alleviate suffering and strengthen the patient's spirit (1-4). But several studies indicate that the palliative care received by cancer patients seem to be insufficient due to the inadequateness of the professionals' communication knowledge and experience about the patient's problems and suffering (5-13).
