Carmen Sylva is the pen name of Elisabeth of Wied (1843 - 1916) the Queen consort of Romania from 1881 to 1914. Elizabeth was a patron of the arts and founded many charitable institutions in Romania. Her literary activity included poems, plays, novels, short stories, essays, collections of aphorisms and biographical stories, written in German, Romanian, French and English.
