Richard J. Umbdenstock, CHE, is the executive vice president for advocacy, governance, and external affairs at Providence Health & Services (Seattle, Washington), a five-state healthcare, social service, and education system under the sponsorship of the Sisters of Providence. Mr. Umbdenstock served as president and CEO of Providence Services since 1993 and helped lead the formation of Providence Health & Services. Prior to joining Providence, Mr. Umbdenstock was an independent consultant to voluntary hospital governing boards in the United States and Canada. He is the author of several books and articles about hospital governance boards. He has also authored national survey reports for the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American Hospital Association and its Hospital Research and Educational Trust.
