Introduction There has been renewed interest in iron therapy for the treatment of anemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD), in part due to concerns that high doses of erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs) might contribute to the high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (Szczech et al., 2010; Zhang, Thamer, Kaufman, Cotter, & Hernan, advance online publication June 22, 2011) In addition, judicious use of iron can result in significantly lower doses of ESAs required to increase hemoglobin with much lower cost.
