Java Head

The morning after turning eleven, Laurel Ammidon wakes to a disquieting decision: the chairs that have been her trusted companions are “just chairs”—and childhood may be slipping away with them.

In a sunlit May garden in Salem, Massachusetts, Laurel grows up in a seafaring family whose rooms hold memories from distant ports and whose grandfather still speaks in the language of ships. She is eager to be treated as older, yet not ready to surrender the imaginative world she has just dismissed. And beyond the household’s rituals, her uncle is expected home aboard the Nautilus. As Laurel tests the boundaries between girlhood and growing up, what will she leave behind—and what might be coming home?
