Beschreibung des Verlags

Jude Fawley is an orphan boy in a Wessex village who teaches himself Latin and Greek and fixes his hopes on Christminster, the gleaming university city on the horizon. But Jude is poor and a stonemason by trade, and the colleges he longs to enter are closed to men of his class. He will spend his life repairing their walls from the outside, an aspiration mocked by the very stones he cuts.

Trapped first into a loveless marriage with the calculating Arabella, Jude then falls into a long and tormented love for his cousin Sue Bridehead — brilliant, unconventional, and married unhappily to another man. Together Jude and Sue try to live by affection rather than by the letter of the law, and a respectable world punishes them for it without mercy, driving the novel toward one of the most harrowing catastrophes in English fiction. Hardy set against the marriage contract his epigraph from Saint Paul — the letter killeth — and made the book an assault on the institutions that broke his characters.

First published in 1895 — so scandalous that one reviewer called it Jude the Obscene and a bishop was said to have burned his copy — Jude the Obscure is an indictment of class, the closed door of education, and the cruelty of marriage law. The storm it raised helped drive Hardy out of fiction for good, into the poetry of his last decades.

This edition pairs the complete text with an editor’s foreword on the novel’s composition, censorship, and meaning, a biographical note, a guide to further reading, and questions for reflection.
