Time travel written under time pressure
The plot development is hasty and incoherent, there are plenty of figures without any discernible character that one struggles to remember, or care about. Also, one forgets them as they keep dying without anybody being too sad about their loss. In fact, some characters are apparently introduced only to behave badly so they can be sent off, or get killed, others get killed to convince the reader that everything is really really dangerous, but you need a lot of training to be killed that way, or perhaps you don’t. Also, historians are identical to biologists, or astronomers, or paleontologists, or not. The whole setup is unconvincing even for a fantasy world, and inconsistencies are so omnipresent that it is really annoying. The main character is good at cursing, had a difficult childhood and is bad at trusting people, including her love interest, which hurts him and makes him overreact, but the reader can skip this this episode as is has no impact on the story whatsoever. Overall, the story describes a sequence of time travel events all characterized by obviously terrible planning under unnecessary time pressure, lacking communication, followed by panic and overreaction. Perhaps, this also describes the underlying writing process. This book was really disappointing.
