After a Halloween storm damages Angel Brewster's country home, she's ready to return to the city. However, Deputy Sheriff Jared McKinney offers Angel and family the use of his hillside cabin. Content with his solitary life, he's intrigued and challenged when his overburdened neighbor admits she's vowed never to fall for a risk-taker after she was widowed from a sports-related accident.

With Angel's two mischievous sons, her pregnant sister, and a grandfather, who covets dangerous pyrotechnics, Jared's treasured solitude is now nonexistent. Yet, the scents of Angel's baking, a pronounced lisp that disarms, and her sensuous kisses have him reevaluating his cynical theories about love and family.

Escapee, Lee Vander, has recently returned to the vicinity of his hometown. After he threatens Angel about monies her uncle owes him, Jared and his colleagues arrange extra protection for Angel. Before Jared can consider a future with her, Lee must be apprehended, or the next person he kills might be Angel.
