Leisure and the Classical World

Leisure. Free time. A commonplace theme. But this book reveals the complexities behind the concept of leisure. In the first part of the book we take an approach based in Philosophy. In it we ask: what is the purpose of leisure? How does leisure relate to work? What did the Greek philosophers think was the best way to spend our precious leisure time? The second part of the book draws from Classical Studies. It looks at the relationship between place and leisure and why some places have been seen as particularly appropriate for leisure. You will use classical literature and archaeology to explore how Roman villas – large country houses – reflected their owners’ ideas of how best to spend their leisure time. This book offers a range of interactive activities and audiovisual material to engage the reader in a rich, interesting topic.  A student at A-level, International Baccalaureate, or K-12 level will be stretched by this content and teaching.
