Resume/Abstract Based on research and experience in several regions in Quebec, this article critically assesses a number of the concepts used in the literature on migration and interculturalism, with the aim of renewing existing conceptual and theoretical perspectives. These renewed concepts and related issues, which intersect in the diverse fields of immigration studies, will enrich our knowledge of cosmopolitan urban environments. We position integration at the centre of the debate in policy as well as in research to lead us to possible articulations between cultural community and local community. In addition, adaptation and discrimination serve as the basis of our reflections given new findings in the regional context. Questions of citizenship and social participation are analysed through the lens of local interaction, and we question the relevance of policies on multiculturalism and interculturalism. We finish our conceptual tour of regional immigration by considering ethnicity and ethnicization, which refer to the symbolic universe and range of "otherness" generated in the local context.
