Beschreibung des Verlags
Kicked out of college and harassed by his lawyer, Miles Faber abandons New York and embarks on a defiant pilgrimage across the Caribbean to find the shrine of Sib Legeru, an obscure poet and painter. But in the streets of Castita's capital, where a wild religious festival is in full swing, a series of bizarre encounters - including his own repulsive doppelgänger (the son of a circus bird-woman) - and disturbing family revelations await Miles, who soon finds himself a willing victim of dynastic destiny.
A darkly surreal comedy of dazzling linguistic inventiveness, MF is an outrageous tale of blood, lust and the machinations of fate.

Most critics did always treat Burgess as a kind of literary equivalent of a B-Movie. Not because this was in any way justified (just the opposite, some of his works, like Earthly Powers, Tremor of Intent and Kingdom of the Wicked, do not need to hide behind the works of, say, Joyce or Pynchon), but because they appeared to be rather lightweight, entertaining and straight. They deliver complete and accessible stories, even if you do not right away get all the references, sub-contexts and riddles. People who prefer to be members of an exclusive and elusive elite do not like that.
M/F may be Burgess' masterpiece. The story is wild, lively, absorbing, and calling it humorous would be the understatement of the century. I was laughing tears. Once you are able to breath normally again, read it a second and a third time, and try to decipher what is going on beneath the surface, and you will discover one of the most multi-faceted and deep stories ever told, designed with a devilish intelligence that is simply stunning.
Good literature should try to change things by putting a merciless spotlight on the truth. M/F contains more truth than it has pages. Can't ask for more...
