Mogens, and Other Stories

A summer downpour turns Mogens into a singer, snapping his fingers at the rain—until a little girl’s astonished face appears between the hazel leaves. He runs after her, with no idea what he will say.

In J. P. Jacobsen’s late-nineteenth-century Denmark, the woods, fields and lake shift with the seasons, while human hearts prove no easier to read. The title story begins in playful wonder, then turns toward the awkward risks of meeting another person; across the collection, love and loss press against the limits of ordinary life. What will Mogens find when the rain-soaked chase ends?
