My Name Is Maude

Katharine Murray Steele long felt compelled to tell the story of her mother, who took her first teaching position in 1924 in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Katharine went to Rebel’s Creek, photographed the mountains and the little house where Maude stayed. To make this story authentic, she interviewed local historians and studied the ways and times of daily living in the remote rural community. Fact and historical fiction come together in one seamless story. An Appalacian story that blends fact with fiction to bring to life the 1924 experiences of a young school teacher in a remote mountain valley.
