Byline: Ali Sarwar Naqvi Nuclear power, long shunned as a suitable source of energy due to the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, has again been restored and declared "kosher" mainly due to the growing fear of global warming. Nuclear energy was adjudged as environmentally "safe", as against coal, oil and gas - all rendered dirty sources due to their carbon emissions, which is held to be the principal cause of global warming. Of course, nuclear energy was accompanied by the vexing problem of radiological waste disposal, but it was argued that improved technology will eventually solve the problem or at least make it manageable. The renewed interest in nuclear energy led to what was dubbed as the Nuclear Renaissance, as many countries started looking at nuclear energy as the preferred source of power generation.
