Richard Edghill made his Premiership debut at 17 and was soon an England Under-21 international. A pacy defender who could play anywhere across the back four, he caught the eye of England manager Terry Venables; but a devastating knee injury then sidelined him for 21 months, by which time his beloved Manchester City were headed for the third division. Rather than jump ship Edghill stayed to lead the revival back to the Premiership.
