"Stephanie Perkins is the reason we write romance. Overdue is the book her readers have been waiting for." -Christina Lauren, New York Times bestselling author of The Paradise Problem
Ingrid Dahl is a cheerful, twenty-nine-year-old librarian living in the cosy mountain town of Ridgetop. She and her boyfriend since college, Cory, have never discussed marriage; they're perfectly happy with the way things are. But when Ingrid's sister announces her engagement to a woman she's only been dating for two years, Ingrid and Cory suddenly feel pressured to start thinking about the inevitable: marriage and kids.
The thing is, neither of them has ever been with anyone else. Shouldn't they sow their oats before settling down?
They make the unorthodox decision to separate for a month to date other people, assuming that at the end of it, they'll reunite and start planning their nuptials. And Ingrid has the perfect man in mind for this relationship sabbatical--Macon Nowakowski, her cantankerous and completely adorable coworker for whom she's had a crush for years.
But of course the best laid plans often go awry, and when Ingrid and Cory meet at the end of the month to resume next steps in their relationship, it's clear neither of them is ready to get back together...
"Overdue is a beautifully human love story - my favorite Stephanie Perkins book yet." - Rainbow Rowell, No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of Slow Dance
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Bestseller Perkins (Anna and the French Kiss) delivers a touching novel about self-discovery and growth. Ingrid's younger sister's engagement sparks questions as to why Ingrid and Cory, her boyfriend of 11 years, haven't gotten hitched. Having only ever dated and slept with each other, the couple realize they want to experience more before settling down. They agree to take a one-month break to date anyone they like, then get back together to discuss marriage. Ingrid knows just who she wants to spend the month with: her library coworker and longtime crush, Macon. But when Macon shuts down her attempt at a kiss, she's left adrift. She tries to hook up by going to a bar, letting a friend set her up, and joining a dating app, but still hasn't had sex by the time the month is up. Cory's also not ready for the break to end, so they extend their experiment. A second extension ends in heartbreak, in the wake of which Ingrid and Macon begin to grow close once more. For a long stretch of the book, the focus is off what will become of the central couple, which may frustrate some romance readers, but it's gratifying to watch Ingrid explore and learn more about who she is and what she wants. Meanwhile, the tantalizing, slow-burning romance leads to a delicious payoff. This really works.
