There is an old rule of thumb that all horse-handlers live by: Always mount your horse from the left side. The reason for this nearly universal code of conduct is steeped in rich tradition. It dates back to ancient times, when warriors carried swords as they rode on horseback. Since most folks are right-handed, wearing the sword on the left hip allowed for the cleanest, quickest draw at the approach of an enemy. Mounting from the left meant that the rider's leg could swing up over the horse without the sword getting in the way.
