Peg O' My Heart

An Irish girl is left a fortune on the condition that she live three years with English relatives who despise her, be educated, and be made a lady. Manners was an English playwright in New York who wrote the play for his wife, the actress Laurette Taylor, and watched it run for over six hundred performances and make them both rich; this is his own novel of it, and Peg wins every scene she is in. Fifty-eight plates, from Raeburn to Orpen, trace the portrait and the park across two centuries, the faces and grounds of the world Peg must learn to move in.
