In 1996, as an exchange student, I heard a French classmate joke about Dutroux. In 2019 I finally decided to read about Dutroux, and ended up watching a French documentary about “Witness X1”, Regina Louf. It was a shock. I have been lucky my whole life, no abuse, but knowing what happens to many children (and adults) makes me deeply sad. Yet, knowing the truth is better.
I had a classmate, Regina R., who seemed sweet (friendly) but strangely quiet and subdued for an 11-year-old. I wish I could go back in time and help her somehow.
