Sir Walter Scott was a poet, novelist, critic and man of letters, who is recognized as the master of the historical novel.  


“Redgauntlet” is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott, set in Dumfries, Scotland in 1765. The novel's hero is a young man named Darsie Latimer. Early in the novel he has been kidnapped by Hugh Redgauntlet, and taken to a village in Dumfries. After much intrigue Darsie discovers that Redgauntlet is his uncle, and a number of prominent Jacobites, including Prince Charles Edward Stuart, are staying in the village. Redgauntlet intends to start a new Jacobite rebellion, and he offers Darsie to join them.
