Beschreibung des Verlags

Previously unpublished information and accounts make this the definitive book on Rorke’s Drift
A new and intriguing study of the bloody hospital siege that is revolutionary in terms of historical accuracy
Assiduously researched and rich in detail with forewords by James Bancroft and Ian Knight

‘Thornton’s enthusiasm for the subject is inspiring and his in-depth knowledge is exceptional. I welcome his new refresh look on how the battle developed. His narrative has certainly given me food for thought and will do the same for many others.’

James Bancroft, author of Rorke’s Drift: The Zulu War 1879

‘Neil Thornton has gone back to those primary sources, picking over those diligently sought-out by others before him, uncovering some that have been overlooked, and piecing them together with a precision that has not always characterised studies of the battle. Even if you think you know the battle of Rorke’s Drift, his conclusions will intrigue and inspire you.’

Ian Knight, author of Zulu Rising: The Epic Story of iSandlwana and Rorke’s Drift

The battle of Rorke’s Drift is established in history as one of Britain’s most incredible actions where approximately 155 defenders held off a Zulu force of up to 4,000 warriors in a savage, bloody conflict with no quarter given by either side. The battle led to a display of incredible fortitude, courage and tenacity resulting in mutual respect between the British red-coats and Zulu warriors.

Using a vast array of primary accounts, including lesser known and previously unpublished examples, Neil Thornton describes the battle in vivid detail. The actions of each of the eleven Victoria Cross recipients are studied in detail, together with the men who were awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

Illustrated with previously unpublished artwork and photographs, Rorke’s Drift: A New Perspective is a gripping account that questions what is commonly believed to be the true interpretation of fighting that took place, especially in the hospital. A truly compelling read and packed with numerous footnotes and sources, this will appeal to both the casual reader and the serious historian.
