THEY'VE FOUGHT UNDERWATER, IN THE AIR, ON LAND. NOW THEY'RE FIGHTING IN THE SHADOWS.
From Charles D. Taylor, bestselling author of Boomer and Deep Sting, comes a spectacular novel of suspense, moving from sea to land in a battle for control of Eastern Europe and the new Russia.
After the collapse of communism, the former Warsaw Pact countries are in a state of economic and political chaos. Operating in the shadows, a deadly, superbly trained group of the deposed communist elite plots a simultaneous strike against all emerging democratic forces. To challenge this covert army, the U.S. president and a beleaguered Russian leader choose their best — captain Bernie Ryng, a highly decorated veteran Navy SEAL, and Bernie's old archenemy, Spetsnaz Colonel Paul Voronov. The joint commanders deploy their nations' finest military forces, including the world's ultimate counterterrorist units: the KGB's Hostage Rescue Unit and the U.S. Navy's SEAL Team Six.
Fighting together, they lead the attack … in a war to save the new democracies struggling to survive in the land of Marx and Lenin!
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Taylor ( Boomer ) has jumped on the post-Cold War spy thriller bandwagon, with the already cliched plot line of unreconstructed hard-liners trying to restore a totalitarian Eastern Europe. In this case, the reactionaries--a former East German secret policeman, a KGB director and a Russian general with his finger poised over the nuclear button--are joined in their conspiracy by an ambitious if foolish U.S. ambassador and a retired American general who is nostalgic for the good old days, believing that ``the U.S. would remain strong only as long as it faced a strong enemy.'' Despite the incredible premise, Taylor has created a page-turner, teaming up various former enemies, such as American Navy SEAL Bernie Ryng and Russian Spetznaz agent Paul Voronov, to defeat the conspiracy. Along the way there are enough assassinations to fill a morgue, a hellish torture chamber featuring a lethally bright light, an all-out assault against combat helicopters and the requisite close calls for the heroes. The pacing is fast and the action furious and detailed, without crossing the line into techno-thriller jargon.
