Snow Sounds

Three years ago, Melaine Landa found escape from her divorce in Tanner Harris's arms. Memories of that magical time before she pushed him away resurface at a California ski resort. Tanner heads the ski patrol, and she has been hired to run the health clinic. The job will bring her close to Amber, her beloved step-daughter.

 No matter how hard she tries, she remembers the precious nights when Tanner gave her a reason to live. Things had been perfect for them—briefly. She understands why he'll want nothing to do with her now. 

Her feelings for him haven't died, not that it matters. Providing love for a lonely child is everything. She'll do her job at Mammoth which includes working with Tanner to prepare for winter's storms. They share a meal, a hike in the wilderness, a kiss, a hug, another night of lovemaking.

Then Amber's father reveals that he'll soon move, taking Amber with him.

When Melaine tells Tanner why she's crying, he says little. Hadn't he vowed not to fall in love with her after she'd said he's incapable of grasping the depth of her feelings for Amber. He hates hurting her, but she's wrong to cling to a child she has no right to.

Then the mountain rumbles and an avalanche strikes.
