Stephen Grattan's Faith

Stephen Grattan's Faith is a sober, deeply humane tale of alcoholism, repentance, and the hard work of rebuilding a shattered life. At its center is John Morely, a once-promising builder whose drinking drives his wife Alice and their six children into poverty, shame, and repeated upheaval, while their young daughter Sophy is forced into a role of courage and care beyond her years. Through winter storms, empty cupboards, sickness, and fear, the Morelys cling to hymns, Scripture, and the fragile hope that God has not forgotten them. Compassion enters through Stephen Grattan, whose practical aid and spiritual steadiness help save the family from ruin, even at great cost to his own household. His wife Dolly's own story of loss, fire, and redemption deepens the novel's moral vision, while Samuel Muir's patient, self-denying friendship gives John the refuge he needs to recover his self-respect. In the end, the long-awaited reunion of the Morely family becomes a scene of warmth, gratitude, and quiet triumph, affirming that faith, sacrifice, and human kindness can still restore what seemed lost forever.
