Abstract The focus of this research is to investigate Chinese attitudes toward women as managers, with the goal of enhancing the success of Western women managers on expatriate assignments in China. Results indicate that Chinese women hold more positive perceptions of women as managers than do Chinese men, and that both have some reservations about the managerial ability of women. This research presents implications of gender stereotypes for the performance of women expatriates in China. Specific strategies are provided to address each issue related to managerial effectiveness of the woman expatriate in China.
