Week May 22-27 The EU-imposed sanctions on Syria were widely reported by the Syrian press this week. On May 23, Syrian TV showed Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem commenting on the sanctions, saying, "Syria will emerge from the crisis stronger and more united, and our people will defeat the conspiracy against us. The old colonizing powers Britain and France have pushed through the sanctions, reminding us of the two countries' history in the region". He added, "The history from the Sykes-Picot agreement is repeating itself, as these countries are provoking violence and shaking our stability, as well as blocking the Government's attempts to improve the situation in the country".
