Detective Graham Kable always dreamed of working for Scotland Yard but his beat was confined to the sleepy village of Odamere. When old Miss Nighthorne is murdered it triggers a chain of events that lead him to the city where he discovers that the people who called her a Witch might not have been far from the truth. Detective Kable finds his beliefs challenged and his faith shattered as he searches for his daughter in the bleak Victorian streets.
