The Absentee

At the opera, London’s grandest voices turn Lady Clonbrony’s accent into a joke—and her son, Lord Colambre, is close enough to hear every word. What he hears is more than gossip: “Irish absentees” will not leave his mind.

In fashionable Regency London, Lady Clonbrony spends lavishly to win a place among the English elite, while her family’s Irish identity becomes the talk of the town. Lord Colambre loves his mother, but he cannot ignore the contempt she earns by trying to disown her roots—or the responsibilities that come with the family’s Irish estate. As he begins to look beyond London’s parties, the question of what a landlord owes his people grows harder to avoid. Can Colambre find a truer path between family loyalty, social ambition, and duty to Ireland?
