Nancy Evans married Lewis Titterton in Manhattan in 1929. An aspiring author she met the Englishman, who soon became an executive with NBC, in one of New York's literary circles. They lived for a time in a West Side neighborhood that was a part of Hell's Kitchen. Nancy disliked the noisy area and feared for her life, even though the windows of their residence were covered with bars. In October 1935 the couple moved to fashionable Beekman Place, in the shadow of Beekman Tower. The apartments there housed some of New York's most famous people, including John D. Rockefeller III and William S. Paley, the President of CBS. Ironically Nancy became the victim of a horrific murder inside her apartment. It happened two days before Easter in 1936.
