The Broken Fiddle

Sally Anne Sweeney travels from her Donegal home to the hiring fair in Strabane. It is 1922, a brutal year in Ireland as partition carves the country in two. She is hired to a young farmer in west Tyrone where the new border divides parishes and communities; it runs between farms and through old friendships. This is not a good time for Matthew Henderson to be falling in love with someone from ‘the other side’, but how can you help yourself when your new maid is such a lovely person, so intriguingly pretty, so inexpressibly funny, and particularly when she is sleeping just a few feet away, upstairs in your attic?
