Anthony Throllope (1815-1882) was an English writer, one of the most influential writers of the Victorian Era. In his works he portrayed the most sufficient problems of his time: political, social and family issues. The author tended to follow the traditions of English humorous writers and depicted the day-to-day life of the contemporary English clergy which was a sufficient part of the English society.

'The Claverings' is a novel first published in 1866. The central figure of the story is Henry Clavering, a son of a clergyman. The young man is supposed to follow in his father's footsteps and start career in church. Nevertheless, he would rather become an engineer and eventually he manages to get a job in a firm and falls in love with a daughter of one of his employers.
