The Enchanted Castle

Gerald wins a day’s freedom with a damp hand, a butter-wouldn’t-melt smile, and just enough truth to charm Mademoiselle. Now he and his brother and sister are off to find a cave—and perhaps an enchanted castle.

It’s the school holidays in Hampshire, but measles has kept Jerry, Jimmy, and Kathleen from going home, and seven weeks at school seem unbearable. Quick-witted Gerald persuades their French governess to let them explore the woods, where the children hope to make a game of their own. There’s a rumor of a cave near the Salisbury Road—and, the same story goes, an enchanted castle. Is either one real?
